The EU and Palm Oil: Found out at last!
Malaysia's palm oil industry is worth about RM50 billion annually and chances are that revenue may even touch RM60 billion this year, if current prices remain steady until the end of the year.
That crude palm oil is being sold at RM2,550 a tonne is certainly good news for planters, smallholders and all those associated with the industry.
But then there are detractors. It has been reported that the European Union (EU), through its environmental ministries and commissions, has been involved in funding up to 70 per cent of the operating budgets of environmental NGOs in efforts to paint a not-so-rosy picture about palm oil.
And these NGOs have been viciously campaigning against palm oil imports into the EU, especially for biofuels, says Tan Sri Dr Yusof Basiron, CEO of the Malaysian Palm Oil Council, who regards this as a "senseless and immoral attack on exported commodities such as palm oil produced by developing countries."
Writing in his blog, he said, such funding implicates the EU for creating barriers to trade for agricultural products from developing countries.
"Unlike the EU, developing countries do not have access to financial resources to fight such government funded vicious campaigns. The eventual outcome will be untold miseries where poor farmers in developing countries lose their source of income as their export commodities are unable to enter the EU market," he said.
This is something which palm oil-producing countries will have to seriously address if the livelihood of their planters and farmers is to be safeguarded. Almost half a million people are employed by the palm oil industry in Malaysia.
Interestingly, a campaign by Friends of the Earth to pressure the European Commission (EC) to rule "a tree plantation is not a forest" that restricts the recognition of palm oil as a renewable biofuel in the EU may have failed.
According to a newsletter produced by "Palm Oil - Green Development Campaign", this means that the EC may classify oil palm plantations as forests, which would therefore meet the sustainability criteria of the EU's Renewable Energy Directive (RED).
Under RED, land which used to contain primary forest prior to 2008 but no longer does, cannot be used for biofuel feedstock to meet the EU's 10 per cent target under RED.
It has been reported that the draft guidelines define a "forested area" as "areas where trees have reached, or can reach, at least heights of five metres, making up a crown cover of more than 30 per cent". They would normally include forest, forest plantations and other tree plantations such as palm oil.
"The EC's position would therefore recognise that the important property of tropical forests for climate change policy is the high sequestering capacity of tropical foliage, tall wooded plants and multi-decade crop rotation.
Short rotation coppice [the practice of repeatedly cutting young tree stems down] may qualify if it fulfils the height and canopy cover criteria," the newsletter stated.
It would seem that the EC has recognised the environmental benefits of palm oil as highly energy efficient, high yield and economically beneficial biofuel as the oil palm trees sequester or remove more carbon dioxide than other biofuel crops.
Another development that has put palm oil in positive light is research from Wageningen University in the Netherlands which shows that "palm oil is the most efficient energy crop."
The university's finding is a rejection of environmental NGOs and the anti-palm oil lobbyists who consistently claim that palm oil is unsustainable.
Its research found that palm oil, sugar cane and sweet sorghum are currently the most sustainable energy crops. These commodities also produce "far smaller quantities of greenhouse gases than fossil fuels".
The university's analysis considered nine different energy crops against nine different sustainability criteria with palm oil coming out on top while biofuel from maize from the United States and wheat from Europe scored far lower.
The report's author, Sander de Vries, concluded that sustainable sugar canes and oil palms get the most energy per hectare and cause the least environmental damage.
De Vries also highlighted a major advantage of the oil palm crop was that, unlike other energy crops, it produces enough residue to power the oil extraction processes.
Another positive development for palm oil took place in the European Parliament recently when Dr Gernot Pehnelt, founder and director of GlobEcon, an independent research and consulting institute based in Germany, released a new study that revealed the prejudiced nature of the EU's Renewable Energy Directive towards foreign biofuels.
The report, entitled "European Policies Towards Palm Oil: Sorting Out Some Facts," demonstrated that the assumptions contained in the directive about the ecological impact of foreign biofuels reflected political and not scientific or economic reality.
Dr Pehnelt came to the defence of the rich biodiversity in oil palm plantations, their excellent crown cover that oil palms provide and the yield per hectare advantages of this low-energy and low-fertilizer crop.
"Sadly, many of the claims that foreign biofuels, specifically palm oil, are a threat to the environment are seriously flawed, some even completely unfounded," he said, adding that the side effects of the flawed policies could give rise to political friction and trade disputes to severe economic handicaps for developing countries.
"This new study makes a strong case that RED discriminates against non-EU producers of biofuels, such as Asian palm oil.
"Perhaps most importantly, palm oil acts as a substantial driver of economic growth in the developing world, drastically reducing hunger and poverty in regions that actively cultivate this valuable crop.
"It's time for Europe to not only recognise the energy and environment benefits of palm oil, but also the suffering in low-income, tropical countries that palm oil critics continue to perpetuate," said Dr Pehnelt, who has been invited by MPOC to speak on "European policies towards palm oil - setting the record straight" at the International Palm Oil Sustainability Conference in Kota Kinabalu from May 23 to 25.
The MPOC says that the conference will feature the latest developments, breakthroughs and technologies related to the sustainable development of the palm oil industry, with a focus on major issues such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), carbon footprint, sustainable production, certification and branding, biodiversity conservation and the corporate social responsibility of the palm oil industry.
Over the years, palm oil has emerged to have a huge multiplier effect to the Malaysian economy, with almost half a million people employed in the industry.
Additional workforce is also required to run downstream processing industries as palm oil is a multi-commodity industry.
It is not just palm oil, but also palm kernel oil and palm kernel cake, which have different market and applications. Oil palm biomass and methane can also be used to produce electricity.
Currently, there are 600 million oil palms in Malaysia that could be also harvested and converted into fibre products, including medium density fibre boards as well as pulp and paper. Oil palms are also harvested to make furniture.
"Put all this together, palm oil is a very important and vibrant industry, which makes a lot of money for the country," said MPOC's Dr Yusof.
Malaysia has been working very hard to make its palm oil industry environmentally-friendly and socially responsible. Oil palm is only planted on land designated for agricultural production.
Today, Malaysia still maintains 56 per cent of its total land area under forest, thereby keeping its pledge made at the 1992 Rio Summit to keep at least 50 per cent of its land area under forest intact. It is certainly food for thought for the detractors. THE END

New Technology To Generate Hydrogen Fuel From Seawater
However, the University of California, Berkeley, may have solved the connudrum by utilizing molybdenum catalyst to react with seawater. The molybdenum compound behaves as a bulk magnet to split water to generate hydrogen gas.
There is no need for additives, organic acids or solvents through the whole process and the catalyst is more stable than nickel and iron compounds.
Hydrogen is one of the best green energy and it is renewable too. If the process helps to reduce the production cost, there is hope of mass usage.

It is important that we become better stewards of our planet. Here are some easy tips that everyone can implement.
1. Recycle more – Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours or a 100 watt light bulb for 20 hours. Each ton of mixed paper that is recycled can save the energy equivalent to 185 gallons of gasoline. If everyone recycled their newspapers, we would save 250,000,000 trees each year. We throw away over 25 billion Styrofoam cups each year. Each month we throw away enough glass bottles to fill a skyscraper. A glass bottle takes over 4,000 years to decompose. Disposing a single quart of motor oil improperly can contaminate over 2,000,000 gallons of water. This year make a commitment to recycle more than you did last year.
2. Use Recyclable bags when shopping – Plastic bags kill 1,000,000 sea creatures each year. If your plastic ends up in the landfills it will take over 1,000 years to decompose. Plus as they decompose they release chemicals in to our land that contaminates our water supplies.
3. Use fewer plastic bottles – Use recyclable bottles for your water but when you do use plastic be sure to recycle. Right now 8 out of every 10 plastic bottles are not recycled. You can recycle most plastic bottles with the PET #1 and HDPE #2 --- 96% of all plastic bottles produced.
4. Don’t use chemicals in your yard – There are other ways to take care of your yard without poisonous chemicals. A mixture of water and salt will kill weeds; use composted material for fertilizer; kill mites with 1 quart of water, 2 tbs of tobasco sauce and 1 tsp of dishwashing detergent; take care of aphids, white flies and spider mites with 2 liters of water and 2 tbs of dishwashing detergent.
5. Replace poisonous cleaning products with natural products – There are several products on the market now that you can choose from. However, some simple solutions that you can do yourself are: use baking soda to clean and deodorize; use lemon juice for bacteria; use white vinegar to cut grease, remove mildew and some stains; use cornstarch to clean carpets and windows.
6. Use environmentally friendly light bulbs - They may be more expensive to begin with but you will save money in the long run with lower electric bills, plus they will last longer. If we change to efficient LED’s we can cut 6% off our national electric consumption. It is estimated that you will save $30 over the lifespan of each compact fluorescent light bulb that you install in your home or office.
7. Composting – 26% of our waste disposal each year is from food and yard waste. Using compost materials in your yard can reduce pests and plant diseases; eliminate the need for chemical fertilizers; and provide healthier, higher yields for gardens.
8. Eco friendly landscaping - Our water supply is a huge concern right now in many parts of the world. Help use less water by having native plants in your landscaping; reduce turf grass; solar paneled landscape lights; and have rain water sensors on sprinkler systems.

Green (Non-toxic) paint
Of course the durability can be helped by more chemistry. But there are different, more natural options.
What's toxic about paints?
First, there's the solvent issue. Oil based paints need to be thinned with turpentine - bad for the skin and the environment. Acrylics thin with water. But there's a downside to that: one may get to believe that acrylics are harmless and can be tossed into the sink. Which is not a good idea.
Shellac is even more difficult in terms of solvents - pure shellac only dissolves in pure alcohol or thinner. When you work with it, there's a high omission of VOC (volatile organic components)
But: shellac is a purely natural component, and considered safe for kids furniture and toys - once it's dry.
Other toxic aspects of paints are their binder, and their pigment. First the binder. I think, in the list of traditional binders, acrylic binder is the most toxic of them all... The pure ingredient of oil-based paint is linseed oil - you can put that on your salad, if you like the taste of it. Eventual additives may be less harmless, but it's very well possible to produce a 'green' oil paint. Latex is a rubber, also a natural ingredient. About eggs and milk, there's no need of saying more.
And last, the pigments. Some pigments are toxic, others are harmless. Some ar e natural, others highly chemical. It's a matter of choice, made by the paint manufacturer. A choice you can make yourself, when you make your own paint.
Available green options
Really, there are many green options available for exterior and interior house painting, especially when you work with fresh materials like untreated wood and plaster, or new drywall. Although, shellac sticks to virtually anything (and can be painted over with latex or oil-based paint). Green paints often need a little extra drying time, or care while you handle them. Egg- and milk paint have to be really fresh, when liquid they start to rot within days (which makes them unsuitable for retail), but of course, that's only a problem for big manufacturers. And, sometimes you need to do an extra layer or so.
For new walls, egg-tempera paint or milk paint is a good option. Egg-tempera is made of eggs and pigments in water, carefully put together in the right proportion of volumes. Egg paint dries fast, is tender for the first week, but gets really tough in time. The Egyptian tombs were painted with egg-tempera paint (about 3000 years ago).
For milk paint, it's about the same. It's the caseine that makes milk a good binder. Caseine is one of the strongest glues around. Milk or fresh cheese was used in Italian dry fresco, which also have been preserved for ages (in most cases). Milk paint was used in traditional American farm houses. It can be put on untreated wood as well, and it's available in a ready-to-mix powder form, to which you only have to add water.
Both egg-tempera and milk paints are matte. You can make them shiny by giving them an extra layer of another binder, like bees wax (that was turned into a soap), a shellac, or eventually an acrylic. But usually, people prefer matte colors for walls.
For the protection of wood, boiled linseed oil or polymerized tung oil are good options. Tung oil is said to be less yellowing. Especially polymerized tung oil is a great material. It's made of nuts, so people with an allergy to nuts have to be careful with it. Tung- and linseed oil have different drying processes, and shouldn't be mixed or painted over each other.
For the rest, getting good protection for your wood and plaster walls is mostly a matter of layering the materials right. When you polish or paint a linseed-oiled wood every year with a fresh, thin layer, it will be kept good for hundreds of years.
If you want to make a new start on old oil-based layers, use shellac, and after that an eco-friendly oil-based paint.

People have been making leather for millennia, for clothing, for shelter, for tools, for binding, for furniture, and for protection, along with many other uses.

“Splits” are the underside of the skin and as such are rather plain, so embossing, pigmenting, and sealants are typically applied to increase the look and value of splits. This process is called “correcting” the hide.
Leather for furniture can be dyed, stained, waxed, sanded, embossed, and pigmented by hand to achieve the look and finish that the tanner desires. Each process and how it is done will determine the final look, feel and durability of the leather. The finest hides are aniline dyed in a vat so that the dye penetrates the hides completely and offers better color consistency. Fine leathers are often “micropigmented” by adding a light layer of pigment to the surface to make the color even more uniform without affecting the “hand” or feel of the leather.
Leather is appropriate for both traditional and contemporary furniture designs. With traditional furniture designs, leather provides an elegance and luxury. Paired with brass and gold accessories, any dark leather exudes a regal look to the room. When used in contemporary settings, more vibrant colors of leather, suede (nubuck) and high sheen finishes will provide that impact that the modern design calls for.
Regardless of the style, the unique nature and individuality of each hide and each piece of furniture made from it will add beauty, value, comfort, and pride of ownership to your leather sofa or chair.

Using Paper Scraps
Most households generate a lot of paper scrap. Google Invests $38.8 Million In Advanced Wind Farms
Two wind farms in North Dakota now enjoy the support of a certain search giant. Google announced this afternoon that it's invested $38.8 million in the farms, and believe it or not, this may be a move that both environmentalists and investors can get behind.
In a post on the Official Google Blog, Rick Needham, whose title of "Green Business Operators Manager" itself speaks to striking a balance between environmental and financial concerns, explained, "[W]e're aiming to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy - in a way that makes good business sense, too."
Needham also stated, "[W]e've been looking at investments in renewable energy projects, like the one we just signed, that can accelerate the deployment of the latest clean energy technology while providing attractive returns to Google and more capital for developers to build additional projects."
And concerned parties should know it's not like Google had to get rid of any employees in order to accommodate this investment; the company's first-quarter earnings report revealed it had $26.5 billion more or less lying around as of March 31st.
One more for-the-record item: for the moment, at least, Google won't be using either of the wind farms to power any of its data centers.

Google's Green Software Can Track Deforestation
Google is pro-active in the green energy business. It has introduced a new software that can track and monitor know the global level of deforestation.
Developed in conjunction with Greg Asner of the Carnegie Institution for Science and Carlos Souza of Imazon, the software analyzes the level of deforestation through satellite image data.
Past, present and future data combine to offer realistic info on the tree cover.

Mana La Solar Car On Display at Peterson Automotive Museum
Mana La, the solar car that revolutionized the automotive arena when it was made in the late 1980s, is now on display at the Peterson Automotive Museum till May.
John Paul DeJoria, chief executive of Beverly Hills-based hair care products company John Paul Mitchell Systems, donated this car to the museum.
The 19-foot-long and 6.5 feet high and wide Mana La had participated in the inaugural World Solar Challenge in Australia too.
However, due to terrain failure and low wind power, it was eliminated from the race. Now, the solar car is on another mission i.e. to enlighten masses with the essentials of sustainability.

Solar Energy On Your Subaru
Issa Awawdeh, an engineer from the West Bank, has added a solar panel and an electric motor to a Subaru. Now, the $4,000 modification allows him not to rely on petrol anymore. Instead of it, he connects his car batteries to the mains and runs the electric circuits, lights, wipers and stereo via solar energy.
I installed an electric motor, but otherwise it is a normal car and is not different from other cars. It cost me about $2.50 to drive from home to work. Now with this car, it costs me 30 cents. That means I save a lot.
The modification has indeed helped him to reduce the car’s running cost by 90 percent. He wishes that his next solar-powered car could be fueled “by 70 percent solar power,” and could offer him a top speed of 120 km per hour and a 200 km range, given that he gets the funding in time.

Aerolabe – A Solar Powered Airship
A new concpet airship has been designed to fly green on solar energy.
Introducing the Aerolabe, brainchild of painter and sculptor Gaspard Schlumberger, who believes that solar powered aircarfts will replace current gas-guzzlers to provide a clean and green environment.
The cigar-shaped Aerolabe has solar panels and wings to make it take to the skies.
Gaspard estimates that three and a half million euros will turn his dream into a reality - with the goal of sailing over the Atlantic in the Aerolabe without polluting the airspace.
I applaud his concept but I am just curious to know what a week of thunderstorms or foggy weather will do to Aerolabe. Will passengers be stranded in mid-air?

Indian Army Install windmills and Solar Panels at Siachen Glacier
The Indian Army is adopting eco-friendly windmills and solar energy at Siachen glacier, lying between India-Pakistan and the highest battlefield of the world.
The green energy move is part of their effort to save the glacier from pollution, and to cut down on the cost of the fuel and logistic efforts.
With the installation of eco-friendly windmills and solar panels, the soldiers are no longer dependent on kerosene and diesel for running generators to heat their huts and lights.
The government has sanctioned Rs 3,000 crore to realize the green energy plan. There are also plans for renewable energy at other frontier areas in Ladakh region.

'Beam down' Solar Energy Project At Masdar City
Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s multifaceted renewable energy initiative along with Japan’s Cosmo Oil Company and the Tokyo Institute of Technology has launched a new project at Masdar City.
The advanced concentrated solar power (CSP) Central Tower research and development project will test ‘beam down’ technology. The beam down technology is known to have the capability of transforming solar irradiation into electricity more efficiently in comparison to other technologies.
The beam down process does just the opposite of what the conventional solar tower technologies do.
Unlike other traditional solar tower technologies, which uses mirrors to direct the sun’s rays onto a receiver at the top of a central tower, to heat a heat transfer fluid, the beam down technology can reduce energy losses resulting from pumping the fluid to an elevated receiver, which would raise operational efficiency and lower electricity generation costs.
This research agreement is the most recent component of an ongoing effort by the UAE to position itself as a global leader in the area of renewable energy technologies.
